Everyone’s starting to get the flip flops and beach towels out because holiday season is well and truly upon us! We hit May and suddenly everyone’s started hopping on a plane and jetting off to sunny destinations. Have you got a holiday coming up but worried that your home might not be safe whilst you’re away? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Below, we’ve shared our top home security tips for when you’re touristing abroad.

4 Home Security Tips for When You Go on Holiday

1. Tell a Neighbour/ Friend

If you’ve got a trusted neighbour or a good friend that lives nearby, let them know that you’re going to be on holiday. Give them your contact details in case they need to get hold of you whilst you’re away. Also, give them a spare set of keys and the PIN for your alarm system, if you have one (and if not, why not? We’ll talk more about that later). If you don’t mind them popping in whilst you’re away, get them to draw the curtains at times you usually would to make it appear as though there’s someone in the house.

2. Time Your Lighting

The second of our home security tips is to have a timer on your lights. Set them to turn on when you’d usually be in and to turn off at the time you would usually go to bed. This will trick people to thinking that there’s someone in the house, similar to the curtain suggestion above.

3. Royal Mail KeepSafe

If there’s something that tells people you’re away, it’s a big pile of envelopes piling up behind your front door! Stop your deliveries whilst you’re on holiday by using Royal Mail KeepSafe. For a small fee, they’ll hold off delivering your mail and store it safely whilst you’re away.

4. Get a Security System

The final of our home security tips is getting a security system. We said we’d get onto this one… if you don’t have a security system installed, why? Security systems are one of the best ways to keep your property secure and often work as a visual deterrent. Common systems for homes are security lighting, alarm systems and CCTV.
