Are you a business owner or in control of a property that would be used by the public? Are you meeting the legal requirements of the Fire Safety Order? If not, why not? For both your own and others’ safety, it’s vitally important to follow this piece of legislation; it’s also against the law not to.

What is the Fire Safety Order?

The Fire Safety Order (Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order) is a piece of legislation that came into force in 2005. It states that any person who is in control of a property must take certain steps in order to reduce the risk of fire in the property and provide an escape route for people to evacuate safely if there was a fire. It applies to any property that could be used by the public such as offices, shops, schools, hospitals, community halls, pubs, factories, hotels and more. It doesn’t apply to private homes.

What Must You Do?

You must carry out a fire safety risk assessment in your property; you must then also keep this up to date and carry it out regularly. Once you’ve carried out the assessment, you must then use your findings to create measures for people to follow to minimise the risk of injuries or fatalities if a fire was to occur.

A few measures to follow are:

Avoid the risk of accidental fires. Ensure that heaters won’t fall over, ensure that any open flames such as candles are not somewhere they could fall off or by anything that could catch fire and avoid building up loads of rubbish that could easily burn in a fire.

Keep flammable objects & substances away from any sources of ignition. For example, don’t light candles by any fabrics that could get into the flame and burn.

Install fire safety equipment such as fire alarms/smoke alarms in your property and ensure that you’re equipped with suitable fire extinguishers.

Keep fire exits/exit routes clear at all times and ensure that they’re also marked clearly to any guests that enter the property.

Carry out training for any employees so that they know exactly what to do in the event of a fire.
